Pennsylvania InheriTax
Nature of these errors: InheriTax update errors indicate that an invalid file combination or installation path has been detected on your computer. In the event that any missing and/or corrupted files cannot be restored, your requested update will be halted.
Nature of these errors: InheriTax configuration errors are rare, and generally occur if the program is not in a functional state at the time you apply an installation or update. The generation of a configuration error message automatically halts any requested installation and/or update so as to protect any existing client data.
SOLUTION: If you receive a configuration error you will need to contact Lackner Technical Support by email support@lacknergroup.com or phone 412.279.2121. When requesting assistance, please cite the error code by number.

The User Accounts Control feature and Windows Vista / Windows 7
One of the many security enhancements to recent versions of Windows is the implementation of the User Accounts Control (UAC). The UAC, which is on by default with Windows Vista and Windows 7, prevents any changes from occurring in the Program Files directory except under certain conditions.
While you will need to make changes in the Program Files directory in order to manage your estate data in InheriTax, your current configuration and the limits imposed by the UAC prevent you from doing so. Therefore, what appears like normal InheriTax functioning may actually be a virtual presentation of the data as it's being saved into a hidden folder created by Windows in order to protect your system from unauthorized changes.
Please note that the concepts and locations discussed in the SOLUTION steps below will vary according to the theme used by your Windows user interface. The following steps assume that you are familiar with the given terms and locations, and with your computer's specific settings. If you have any questions or feel uncomfortable executing the steps outlined below, please contact Lackner Technical Support by email support@lacknergroup.com or phone 412.279.2121.
1. Move the Lackner Software folder out of the Program Files folder
Open the Program Files (or Program Files x86) folder and locate the directory titled "Lackner Software".
Make a copy of this directory and paste it directly into the C: root - this will now be the default installation location for new installations on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Before moving forward, confirm that a folder titled "InheriTax" exists within the Lackner Software folder - this is the location of the actual program directory.
Note: Relocating the "Lackner Software" directory to a location other than the C: root should be done with caution because the directory needs to be accessible from any user profile. If the directory was stored in a location such as the Administrator's "My Documents", the Lackner software could not be accessed by a standard user account.
2. Locate the "Virtual Store" folder and copy its data files into the new program directory
Note: Because Windows enables hidden files and folders by default, you may need to uncheck this option in order to view the full pathway to the actual InheriTax data files.
First, make a copy of the following set of files:
C:\Users\[UserProfile]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Lackner Software\InheriTax\*.usr.
Note: If the UAC is disabled, you will not find the *.usr files in the above location - instead, the files in the "InheriTax" folder will be the actual data. To confirm the status of the *.usr files, reference the most recent modified-dates against the last time the user was in the InheriTax program.
Next,
paste
3. Confirm that the file is fully functional from its new location, and that all expected data is present
Locate and open the Pa_Itax.exe file in your new "Lackner Software\InheriTax" folder. From the Main Menu, click the "Options" button located on the bottom left of your screen. Follow by clicking the "Correspondent Setup" button and, from the window titled "Current Path", look to see that the new C: root location is listed in the program's pathway.
Next, the program user needs to verify that the program contains evidence of recently entered data, thereby confirming that all of the expected data is present in the file.
Once the new pathway and expected data have been confirmed, navigate back to the Main Menu and exit using the "Quit" button.
4. Manually create an icon to designate the executable in its new location
Create a desktop icon for the Pa_Itax.exe file in the new "Lackner Software\InheriTax" folder.
5. Uninstall the program and rename any remnant folders
Go to "Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall "Lackner PA InheriTax" - this action will not affect any existing data.
Rename the "Lackner Software" folder located in the Program files directory to something obvious and recognizable, like "Lackner Software.DoNotUse".
6. Finally, you will need to reapply the CD or webfile
First, check that the prior program file location has been uninstalled.
To finish, you will want to rerun a normal update routine. If no additional errors are detected, the update should automatically recognize the folder you've created on the C: root and proceed to update the program.
